Idris David Trophy

Idris David joined the club in 1923 and is first mentioned in club records in 1924 having competed in a 25 mile time trial in the September of that year. Idder, as he was affectionately known had a wide interest in the club holding several positions on the committee. He was vice captain, captain, and in 1933 started the club magazine, The Time Standard, an entertaining publication which sold for 3d (about 1p). This ran for a few years but petered out under the stewardship of another editor before the start of the Second World War.

Idder became a vice-president in 1936, auditor in 1941, and general secretary in 1943, and was made a life member in 1947. In 1956 he was awarded the National Cyclists Union’s gold badge of honour for services to cycling. The N.C.U. was the forerunner of the Road Time Trials Council which later became Cycling Time Trials or C.T.T. In 1970 he was the winner of the Widman Trophy for his work over the years with the British League of Racing Cyclists and the N.C.U.

Idris became club president in 1962 until 1963. At the 1971 A.G.M. he presented the club with a trophy that previously belonged to the Three Counties Cycling Association for their track championship and it was agreed to use this for the club road race championship. In 1975 the title of Club Father was created for the oldest member and Idder was given this title in 1980 which he held until his death in 1992.

Phil Griffiths was the first winner of this award. Today it is awarded to the winner of the Club Road Race Championship. The Club Road Race Champion is the Club member gaining the most points from their best six performances based upon: – 1st – 6 points; 2nd – 5 points; 3rd – 4 points; 4th – 3 points; 5th – 2 points; 6th – 1 point. All qualifying races must be open to First Category riders.

If not claimed on this basis then the LVRC series of races will serve as a substitute. Three races to count (points awarded as above based on the absolute placing in each race, i.e. no categories). In the event of a tie then the older rider during the racing season (Mar/Sep) to count.
