An eventful ride, with the ambitiously hilly route up Horsepools Hill, Edge Lane, through Painswick to Bulls Cross and Slad Road deterring some (who were spotted at Brookthorpe heading for flatter roads!). At Edge we were approached by a contractor who had received reports that cyclists using the pavement up Horsepools Hill to avoid traffic were struggling with overgrown hedges. My, I thought, “that was a quick response”, but it proved to be coincidence and we were able to point out the offending greenery for his attention. Onward we rode on our direct route, only to be frustrated at The Camp by a No Through Road which was, for once, correct. Having lost so much time the main road was adopted from Coates to Lechlade with drafting skills brought into play. A pleasant but eventful lunch included the drama of a child being locked into an increasingly hot black car in the restaurant car park. The fire brigade arrived, bells ringing and lights flashing, just as the car was successfully accessed. A less dramatic return gave us time to stop at the Royal George in Birdlip before the precipitous drop to Brockworth and home.
