The route to Dursley was hillier than some may have expected! The group of six set off for a circumnavigation of King’s Square, then through the park and into a stiff headwind south. The AA ride was caught at the confusing temporary lights at Cole Avenue and an intermingling for a mile or so then saw an attack by the leader. This pinched two riders from the AA ride, but with permission! The new road at Haresfield was much appreciated. Stonehouse was soon reached and it was into the hills. One rider opted for a flatter route and our youngster also called it a day. Back to six. The ascent of Selsey Common was achieved, taking it easy, then the undulations to the top of Frocester Hill into the wind. The descent to Uley was rapid and thankfully on dry roads. So to Dursley, to find the Bank closed for the weekend. No matter, Plan B, Leaf & Ground. A considerable queue deterred us, so it was onwards to Stinchcombe and Plan C. Lanes down to the A38 and over, with care, to Berkeley for late refreshments.
Post rest, the northbound leg was wind assisted; what a difference. A scenic diversion was requested by the Captain, to admire the view down the Bristol Channel at Sharpness docks – quite breathtaking. We wove our way alongside the docks, then over an old bridge crossing the old railway lines and back onto the planned rote to Purton. This last section was a new one to all on the ride – unusual for a ride in our county!
Time was pressing so we took the wind assisted climb to Claypits, then the Perry Way where a deflation delayed us a while. Directly to the Ship to meet up with two other fellows on the other rides.
Still dry and refreshments consumed it was back home on the lanes. A most enjoyable 60 miles or so. Two punctures to give the two riders an early joint lead in Bruce’s Bonus.
