Eight riders rolled out of the Square for our introductory ride, with a mixture of familiar faces and welcome newcomers joining the fun. We headed via Westgate towards the Quays and onto the canal path, which was surprisingly busy on this chilly morning.
As we approached one of the swing bridges, disaster struck: a puncture! Fortunately, we had a team of willing helpers, and the repair was swiftly sorted. With the mechanical drama behind us, we continued along quieter roads through Longney, Epney and Saul, before turning towards Fretherne and Arlingham.
Despite our unscheduled pit stop, we arrived at Farmers Yard in good time, where coffees and cakes were enjoyed with the enthusiasm you’d expect from a cycling group that had earned them. Suitably refreshed, we braved the ride back, retracing our route to keep the mileage sensible.
There was time for a quick stop to say hello to some very cute baby goats (who were less than happy about our company) and, naturally, a group selfie to prove we’d all made it. At Elmore, two riders peeled off towards Naas Lane, while the rest headed back along the canal path towards the city centre.
All in all, a fabulous day out: new faces welcomed, a puncture conquered, goats admired, cake consumed and everyone safely back by the cathedral.
Huge thanks to Howard and Emma for their support and making sure no one was left behind.
