What did the ten Tempo riders in the square this morning have in common? Well, we’d looked at the forecast and under dressed by a layer or two. Consequently were keen to crack on at a decent pace to ward off hypothermia.
Given the size of the group (we picked up an eleventh going through Churchdown), the relatively wide roads on the way to Cheltenham, and the need to generate heat, we soon settled into a nice rolling chain at a good pace; sharing the work of riding into a stiff headwind, and having a chat with a different companion every few minutes.
The chain disintegrated rapidly once we started up Cleeve Hill, but recovered after Winchcombe for the fast rolling B roads towards Cropthorne. Clive’s was busy and everyone was indoors, but we found seats okay and the service was prompt and friendly as always.
Suitable refuelled we set off home with a lovely tailwind, slipping neatly into the rolling chain when the roads permitted. The group split at Tewkesbury with some heading down the A38, the majority opting to cross the river and return through Forthampton and Ashleworth.
All in all an excellent day out, 60 miles, 2,559 feet, 16.4 mph.
