At the Newport Velodrome on 28 June 2015, GCCC Member Chris Vasey fulfilled his ambition by winning the National Masters 2000m pursuit title in the 55/59 age category. Chris clocked 2:27.3 for 8 laps of the track, using a bigger gear ratio than usual which paid off in him reeling in and past his opponent on the way to achieving what proved to be the fastest time of the day.
Chris then had to sit pedalling his static bike, eyes fixed on the scoreboard, until the last pair of racers finished without anyone being able to better his time.
Last man off was last year’s champion Graham Barclay, who had travelled from Scotland to defend his title. He looked smooth and fast and it was clearly going to be close. He flashed across the line and stopped the clock on 2:27.9 sec, just 0.6 of a second slower than Vasey. Time to celebrate – Vasey’s arms went up as he realised he had won his first National Masters title!
