The Steve Taylor Memorial Road Race is held annually in memory of Steve, a club member who died from an asthma attack on 14th of March 1984. The race is a Cotswold Cycle Racing League event for Categories 2, 3 & 4 riders.
Steve was a member of the Gloucester City Cycling Club at the time of his death, although for most of his cycling career he had been a member of the Evesham and District C.C. of which his father Gordon was a founder member. Steve’s work with Northern Star Insurance brought him to Gloucester where he joined the ‘City’ because it was his intention to concentrate on road racing. His membership was welcomed as it enabled the club to form a strong road team. He was instantly accepted by everyone, always participating in club events, training bashes, club runs, weekends away, and of course the Christmas booze up.
The week before he died he rode his first road race of the season and won a prime prize. There is little doubt that 1984 would have been a good season for him with the amount of winter work that he had put in. His objective was a first category licence.
