Mathematics Exam For Ride Leaders
Answer all the questions, please show your workings. Time allowed 4 hours.
Question 1.
Let X be the number of Tempo riders who leave Kings Square on a chilly but dry morning. X is > 5 and < 15 but that’s all you can tell at the start. Having ridden through Brookthope to Edge, two riders make their excuses and leave the ride, a third just disappears without saying anything. At the same time you pick up two riders who’ve been spat out the back of the fast ride.
For the ride through Cainscross, Selsey and the Stanleys there are definitely eight in the group.
After Frocester Hill you lose one rider who doesn’t stop at the top, but at least everyone has finally warmed up. At the start of the diversion to Blackquarries Hill you catch the escapee but say goodbye to the rider who opts to return through Dursley.
A familiar route through Wooton and Charfield leads to the cafe in the garden centre at Falfield.
a. What is the value of X? (5 marks)
b. How many Dancey Trophy points are awarded? (1 mark)
Question 2.
The group orders two flat whites, one can of coke, one latte, and three black Americanos (one with an extra shot). To eat they order two millionaire’s shortbreads, one fruit cake, two carrot cakes, a cream slice, and a pasty.
The caffeine addict likes carrot cake. The flat white drinkers both like chocolatey snacks. The latte drinker has the same cake as one of the Americano drinkers. The rider who scornes sugary treats also avoids milky coffee.
a. What drink does the fruit cake eater prefer? (5 marks)
b. Who on earth drinks canned coke from the chiller cabinet when it’s virtually freezing outside? (10 marks)
Question 3.
As you leave the cafe you notice your Garmin reports 30.8 miles at 13.3mph. By the time you’ve ridden home through Stone, Ham, Berkeley, and Frampton the values have changed to 56.6 miles at 14.2 mph.
a. What was your average speed on the trip back from the cafe? (5 marks)
b. How close to collapse were you after trying to keep up with the fast group guys on the drag up to Claypits? (1 mark)
56.6 miles, 14.2 mph, 3,383 ft of climbing, and far more fun than a maths exam.
