Wind forecast for today was for a very strong south westerly and forecast was right for once. A quick conflab in the Square resulted in a change of cafe to Clive’s at Upton. Easier for the ride home.
Taking a familiar route out of Gloucester to Maisemore then the traditional route over the Muur de Chargy (that’s its name according to the OS). Through the well know back lanes we emerged in Pendock, then through to Birtsmorton, followed by Castlemorton, after which I was relying on Toby’s knowledge a bit. Eventually, we emerged onto the Upton to Welland road which we used for a short section before turning right to ‘climb’ the Muur de Hook.
A right at the top took us along the traditional route to the cafe but Toby, being slightly mischievous, suggested a slight diversion. A brief right then shortly after a left brought us back onto the route followed by the short drop to Clive’s who coped admirably well with our unexpected visit.
As is always the case, the ride split on the way back with those of us choosing to make our way back to Gloucester via Longdon (what a battle into the headwind) then round the back through The Rampings before crossing the main road to Forthampton, Chaceley then Tirley. A quick discussion with a local who felt we weren’t going to make Wainlodes. However, we sent a scouting party along the road who returned after a while to say we weren’t going to get through.
Our ride continued then along the B road through Lower Apperley to arrive at the A38 but not before me and Daryl had a moment with a crosswind.
We cut across to Hardwicke before following the traditional route past The Old Spot and Staverton before using the Green Mile, which could do with a bit more regular sweep.
Must admit I was glad to turn off in Churchdown as I was starting to feel rather battered!!
