Sixteen gathered in the Square and we welcomed Ann and John back from Australia on holiday also Alister Scott and Toby, aged 10 who rode the whole route effortlessy. It was a hilly ride through the Forest and down to Redbrook where the leader made a wise decision not to take the group over the hill to Mitchell Troy. The group lost its cohesion and missed out on a photo opportunity on the Mono Bridge, riders should stay with the leader. it should be noted that two riders took in the ‘official published’ route, finding the bridge crossing with ease then taking the right hand road from The Boat Inn– a long, gradual (opinions differ on this – another reporter considered it steep, albeit scenic and challenging) climb with excellent water features and views down to the Wye. The descent to Mitchel Troy was a true delight.
After coffee in search of a viaduct the riders, guided by Les, took an interesting path to a disused metal railway bridge close to the viaduct, it was then along Route 423 by the river to Symonds Yat which was heaving with tourists. The climbs were over as we cycled Walford Bill’s Mill to Pontshill. Some returned to Gloucester and the rest climbed to The Penny Farthing, a pub we had been trying to get to for months. It was certainly worth it as we sat in the sun but we were cold by the time we left. The return ride was via Box Bush, Longhope, Blaisdon Birdwood, Tibberton Highnam and home.
75 miles 4158 feet of climbing. AG
