Tewkesbury Novice Ride 05.12.25

Seven riders gathered in the square on a grey overcast December morning hoping that the rain was not going to be too severe during the ride. The group left Gloucester via Eastgate Street, down through Barton and out onto the Painswick Road. Then into the streets of Coney Hill and through to Barnwood, Abbeymead and Coopers Edge. This is when we were joined by another rider, who had left home without his cycle helmet and made a hasty retreat back home to collect said helmet. We continued through...

‘Tis the season for …

With a wet forecast, three maybe wise men + two others were tempted by the shortened loop ride. The advantage of a pre-published route was made clear as the leader found a flat tyre getting his bike out, and the subsequent tube change meant he was too late to make the Square for 09:00, but could rejoin the group at the Four Mile House. Following the star, or more precisely the GPS signal from a man-made moon, rather than Halley's comet, we left Brookthorpe and were soon in the cloud, so the...

No ice cream today

We were fortunate again this Sunday with a dry, sunny day after a wet and blustery Saturday - but with rather a cold start. Eight riders set off from the Square, via Podsmead and Tuffley on black-slick wet roads to Kingsway; however no ice was encountered, probably due to a combination of grit and temperatures not quite reaching zero. Picking up another rider near his home we continued through Hunt’s Grove (roads much drier here) and made our way past the next set of groundworks onto...

Catch the pidgeon

The face says it all! The two endurance brothers left Kings Square on their own, heading for Tetbury. At Brookthorpe, we were joined by Ian Cole and James Reeves. The four of us shared the wind out through Haresfield, Stonehouse and Kings Stanley out to Frocester. Along the way we encountered the ‘steady’ group and said hi. We all climbed Frocester Hill at our own pace, but contrived to lose contact with James, whilst he was taking a comfort break. From Cockadilly to Tetbury was super fast. We...

A rose by any other name.

Apparently the Inuit language has about a dozen basic words for snow, and about ten more for ice, plus many other derived words and expressions to cover all the many forms these natural elements can take. For us cyclists it's the obsession with getting up hills that challenges the vocabulary. Take today's Tempo ride for example. Four of us tackled the climb of Nut Hill, the incline on the A46, and then the varied pitches of Buckholt Road. By the time we got to the top a faulty rear derailleur...

23rd November

The 23rd of November has had many notable happenings on the day. In 1499, seven days after being convicted of treason, Perkin Warbeck, a pretender to the throne of England, was hanged for attempting to escape from the Tower of London; his supporter John Atwater was executed with him. In 1991, the Queen lead singer Freddie Mercury announced in a statement that he is HIV-positive. He dies the following day. I had a great treat to see that show man at Knebworth in 1986; his final live shown with...

2025 Annual Dinner and Prize Presentation

The Prize Giving was again held at Brickhampton Golf Course. It was organised by Joanna Hunek and was attended by over forty guests. The Guest Speaker was Mel Glass. Mel spoke of how, on retirement , he wanted to pursue new interests and studied for a degree in zoology, which has resulted in his working on ecological studies on Minchinhampton Common. He is more well known, though, for riding his penny farthing. He uses it for charity rides but mainly rides to put a smile on people’s faces....

Teamwork makes the route work

An amazing ten riders set of on the ride in the wake of storm Claudia’s deluge. The autumn weather had been relatively kind but the inevitable change came with a vengeance. Considering the predictable disruption that the storm had caused, the Captain quizzed me about the nominated route, given that a published major landslide would scupper our progress without an easy route change, I knew that even before we left the Square it was going to be an “eventful” day out. We eventually set off down...

Every Claudia has a silver lining

FIVE riders toook the elevated road out of the City, but the new Club Coach quickly realised he was in the wrong company and disappeared up the road to fulfil his need for speed. Storm Claudia had dumped a month's worth of rain on the county on Friday so it was natural to expect some flooding. The Intermediate ride was prepared with some contingency plans. The first, to avoid the main road to Maisemore, proved unnecessary, though the Severn alongside it was swollen and threatening to rise...

Intelligence services save wet feet

A group of seven left on a dry day, but with damp roads for a flat parcours to Croome Park. A buzzard swooping on some road kill 50 yards in front of us was an impressive sight. What I now know is Marsh Road, towards Birtsmorton was like an impressive causeway across flooded fields, alhough our luck ran out with a deep flood in the village. Some rather scary driving was encountered around Upton, but other than that, and two punctures, we arrived at Croome Park for some excellent flapjack. Over...
