Teamwork makes the route work

An amazing 10 riders set of on the ride in the wake of storm Claudia’s deluge. The autumn weather had been relatively kind but the inevitable change came with a vengeance. Considering the predictable disruption that the storm had caused the captain initially quizzed me about the nominated route, given that a published major landslide would scupper or progress without an easy route change, I knew that even before we left the square it was going to be an ā€œeventfulā€ day out. We eventually set off...

Every Claudia has a silver lining

FIVE riders toook the elevated road out of the City, but the new Club Coach quickly realised he was in the wrong company and disappeared up the road to fulfil his need for speed. Storm Claudia had dumped a month's worth of rain on the county on Friday so it was natural to expect some flooding. The Intermediate ride was prepared with some contingency plans. The first, to avoid the main road to Maisemore, proved unnecessary, though the Severn alongside it was swollen and threatening to rise...

Intelligence services save wet feet

A group of seven left on a dry day, but with damp roads for a flat parcours to Croome Park. A buzzard swooping on some road kill 50 yards in front of us was an impressive sight. What I now know is Marsh Road, towards Birtsmorton was like an impressive causeway across flooded fields, alhough our luck ran out with a deep flood in the village. Some rather scary driving was encountered around Upton, but other than that, and two punctures, we arrived at Croome Park for some excellent flapjack. Over...

Club dinner

Joanna organsied a fantastic annual dinner.Ā  Once again Brickhampton Golf Complex proved excellent hosts. Our guest speaker, Mel Glass, was brilliant and entertaining. Only one rider was brave enough to ride the "ordinary" bicycle.

Taking Time To Reflect

For some reason more riders arrived early in the Square today, on a day where the mild temperatures arrived but the forecast rain didn’t - well not until much later in the day. Some overnight rain had left damp patches here and there but overall the road surfaces were generally good and not too leaf-strewn and slippery. Eight set off on the steady ride and were later joined by a ninth who found us after various failed attempts. Leaving the city via Westgate Bridge and thence to Over, we...

Aren’t we lucky?

It was warm and pleasant, for November, as five of us departed the square on the Tempo ride, but we still moaned a bit about the slight chill as we rode through Highnam and Tiberton. The climb through Flaxley to Mitcheldean warmed us up, but the climb up Stenders had us moaning about the gradient instead. The descentĀ ofĀ Cats Hill was so nice that we enjoyed it in silence. A quick wiz along the B road past Kearne bridge was good fun too. To avoid the traffic on Walford Road we took the back...

Fast ride out to see the parade at Wotton-Under-Edge.

Three3 strong riders left Kings Square and then we picked up a fourth at the 4 Mile House. Pacy riding through Haresfield, Stonehouse, Kings Stanley, Dursley and North Nibley got us to Wotton a little early. The parade was excellent and we were able to show our respect and gratitude on this Remembrance Day. Back on the bikes and it was fast and furious back through Charfield and Damery to pick up the A38 back to Gloucester. Strong riding from Steve Brown, James Reeves and Nathan Monk - thanks...

A Day to Remember

Remembrance Day and a short Intermediate pace loop coincided today so that the Club could be represented at the city's War Memorial for the Service of Remembrance. Accordingly a group set out on what became a rather brisk pace through Hempsted and Elmore, perhaps the downside of having an escapee from the Tempo ride, or perhaps the ride leader just having to maintain cadence on his fixie. Either way, despite claims of a rubbing rear brake, we were well ahead of schedule by the time we reached...

Cyclocross update

From Ian Cole: Just over half way through and in the top 5, mostly through good attendance at this point. Hope to maintain a top 5 place but will need some muddy and more technical courses to slow the powerful riders down. The race in Gloucester has been cancelled which is disappointing, but a few more left with Mendips this weekend at a banger racing circuit!

Which way is he going now was the cry!!

Fifteen riders left the square on a bright Sunday morning heading out to Nailsworth. TheĀ group left via Westgate Street and down to Bearlands where a left turn was taken, past the old prison and across the brightly painted crossing towards Gloucester Docks. Over the swing bridge and onto the Quays when theĀ group turned onto the canal towpath. Passing lots of anglers, setting themselves up for a day of fishing, or topping up their tan, especially the ones sitting on the bend of the canal. Back...
