The Rough and the Smooth – a tale of two surfaces.

For the Captain’s third ride leadership on the trot (the previous two were emergency stand-ins) six brave riders turned up at the appointed hour of 8.30am. Not deterred by the health warning of hills to come! The hills are alive with the sound of…complaints! As notified, the start was to Nut Hill and Fiddlers Elbow. Here, the leader started to ad lib: Cranham road had a good looking surface of recent application, so we gave it a go to the bottom – fast and smooth! The little climb to the Black...

Novice Ride for Experienced Novices

Following one of the hottest weeks of the year the weather forecast for the ride was relatively cool at a mere 20°C, cloudy with the possibility of showers. However, the quality of the riders opting for the novice ride was exceptionally high. There was one new rider and another father and son combo who had ridden before, with the remainder being “old experienced hands”. We set off down Southgate Street and along the Bristol Road intending to divert onto the canal bank at Hempstead Lane. That...

Looking For Angels

The tempo ride set off for Sherston with seven riders, two of whom would have to pull off early due to other commitments, so from Stonehouse onwards we would proceed with five. The ride leader was wishing for wings ascending Selsey, watching the riders in front flying compared to him. We did regroup and with a slight downhill and wind assistance it felt like we were flying along the roads to Sherston where we had our date with the Angel Cafe. The sustenance of coffee and carrot cake seemed to...

Steady ride to the Forest, but what was the time?

A gaggle of eight, then nine, set off for the deep dark Forest with the Captain taking the leadership from an indisposed AliG. We were reasonably loyal to his published route, but with diversions at the whim of the deputy lead. Mainly to keep people guessing… The beauty of an 8.30am departure is that the main roads are that bit quieter when leaving the city – and so it proved, the A40 and section of Newent road being not too fearsome. The cycle lane to Highnam and the wiggle through the...

Apologies to Aesop

The Intermediate and Tempo rides were both heading to Coleford; the Intermediate route was shorter but with some off-road, ours longer with more climbing. It was a straight showdown; tortoises versus hares! Us hares shot off, only to be caught by the tortoises at the Quay St lights, and again at the start of the Over Causeway. Very demoralising. We'd only got to Tibberton when the lead hare felt unwell and had to return home. Shortly after that one unfortunate hare had two visits from the...
