What would you do for a free mince pie?

What would you do for a free mince pie? Well the answer for the eight Tempo rides who ventured out today was 'ride up Castle Hill'. The route was benign to start with, taking in Staverton and Tredington on our way to 'The G's', and then Winchcombe. From there we started the main event of the day - the climb up Castle Hill. The pack was soon scattered as people made their way up at their own pace, some perhaps regretting having started the day with ambitious turns on the front. More than one...

Winter Solstice, marked by a short ride and mince pies

A day for the diary, for Toby's route had been published beforehand! Calm your racing hearts, though, for it's not a change of practice, but a consequence of his deputising the ride lead. Our newest vice President was briefed and duly created a GPS path. His ten followers could tell from the start, as we rode the dragstrip of the SW bypass, that the brief was not being followed to the letter but a turn towards the Barn Owl Centre (or Sewage works, pick your own landmark) and canal towpath...

Bumper edition of Spokespiece now available

This December we have a surfeit of material for the newsletter. With four tour reports and the usual end of season summaries there would have been no room for the photographs, of which there are many. Something had to go, and it was the sixteen page format, so here is your bumper edition. Just in time for Christmas! Toby writes of his long delayed off road tour of Utah’s canyon country, Simon of a ride along the Rhine valley with his wife. The autumn tour missive is a team effort, and the...

Reflective mudguard stickers

The club has purchased some reflective mudguard stickers and will be distributing them on future rides.  Please ask.

Three Counties club ride

A sudden incapacity for the designated ride leader, our previous President, meant the Captain was called upon to lead. No time to post a new route, and upon checking the original plan, some alternatives were applied: I call this the ride leaders prerogative! Ten set off from the Square, with some concern being articulated from those that had downloaded route: would it be the same? Would there be hills? In the fullness of time, the outcome was clear: no and just a few little ones. I think the...

A game of two halves

What a beautiful morning for cycling. With the stiff breeze on our back, we were flying, and really enjoying ourselves. It felt like being in the world class Brazil teams of old. Small setbacks like a muddy corner and small flood did nothing to dampen our enjoyment, and even the climb to Wyche was good fun. After coffee, we found the wind was more than a stiff breeze, so rather than Brazilian flair, we resorted to dogged German teamwork to get us home. Some very poor surfaces, would have had...

Tewkesbury Novice Ride 05.12.25

Seven riders gathered in the square on a grey overcast December morning hoping that the rain was not going to be too severe during the ride. The group left Gloucester via Eastgate Street, down through Barton and out onto the Painswick Road. Then into the streets of Coney Hill and through to Barnwood, Abbeymead and Coopers Edge. This is when we were joined by another rider, who had left home without his cycle helmet and made a hasty retreat back home to collect said helmet. We continued through...

‘Tis the season for …

With a wet forecast, three maybe wise men + two others were tempted by the shortened loop ride. The advantage of a pre-published route was made clear as the leader found a flat tyre getting his bike out, and the subsequent tube change meant he was too late to make the Square for 09:00, but could rejoin the group at the Four Mile House. Following the star, or more precisely the GPS signal from a man-made moon, rather than Halley's comet, we left Brookthorpe and were soon in the cloud, so the...

No ice cream today

We were fortunate again this Sunday with a dry, sunny day after a wet and blustery Saturday - but with rather a cold start. Eight riders set off from the Square, via Podsmead and Tuffley on black-slick wet roads to Kingsway; however no ice was encountered, probably due to a combination of grit and temperatures not quite reaching zero. Picking up another rider near his home we continued through Hunt’s Grove (roads much drier here) and made our way past the next set of groundworks onto...

Catch the pidgeon

The face says it all! The two endurance brothers left Kings Square on their own, heading for Tetbury. At Brookthorpe, we were joined by Ian Cole and James Reeves. The four of us shared the wind out through Haresfield, Stonehouse and Kings Stanley out to Frocester. Along the way we encountered the ‘steady’ group and said hi. We all climbed Frocester Hill at our own pace, but contrived to lose contact with James, whilst he was taking a comfort break. From Cockadilly to Tetbury was super fast. We...
