On the day of the first road stage of this year’s Tour de France, 12 riders rode through the neutralised section of the “gated” streets. The flag dropped on a lumpy parcours, ideal for the puncheurs and a break-away was anticipated by many. One of the protected riders dropped a chain on the dreadful surface through Kempley Woods, but in accordance with cycling law, the Peloton regrouped before tackling the brutal section between Kempley and Upton Bishop. The beautiful Walford Valley took us to Hen & Dots cafe on the River Wye for excellent coffee and cake, where the whole peloton arrived together at 11:00 exactly.
The Hors category Col de Ruardean was climbed in Spanish heat and was taken by Patrick, so he holds the polka dot jersey after stage 1. At the entrance to the Flaxley valley, we waved farewell to one rider (no prizes for guessing which one), who left us to return via the Severn Bridge. Once we reached Birdwood, the sprinter’s lead out teams formed up for the final sprint home, although they did not know that the finish line had been moved 2 miles towards the Forest, due to queueing traffic. Eventually, we reached the bus lane, and were able to continue home unhindered.
A very enjoyable morning out.
55 miles, 3,150′ ascent @15.5mph
Just a note that the surface through Kempley Woods is such that I would seriously consider whether it is safe to take a group through there, particularly in the downhill (towards Newent) direction.
