With the inaugural “intermediate” ride ready to roll the tempo posse was reduced as some defected (holiday legs and all that) to the new format. So, five set off and somehow we ended up behind the intermediate ride on the Gloucester Road from Highleadon (see other report). That was “corrected” and a good pace was made to The Nest through our green and pleasant land, especially so at this time of year. The area around Putley was particularly enjoyable with a welcome stillness and good views.
Two of the five didn’t stop for coffee and cake, and continued on home; we enjoyed their company up to there. I think we made the stop at 11.01 hrs, marvellous timing. The route home picked up a bit of a tailwind and, unlike much earlier in the year, the crossing at Ketford was made with no water trouble at all – then the 20% climb!
On the way back one rider turned for home leaving just two and then the ride leader’s companion announced he wanted to do 200 miles and set off to do the Severn Bridge route, plus more. The leader donated some spare food fuel and off he went. He did it (200 miles, 10,205 ft ascent); “chapeau” to him! Must be one of the longest club runs. Anyone clarify?
53 miles, 3,435 ft ascent over 3h 30m
