Despite the excellent weather, there were only six takers for the tempo ride to Lydney Harbour. However, it was an excellent group size, and the group stayed together well. Although the A40 may look on the map to be a busy main road, it is probably the safest and quietest of the three options to head towards the Forest. Beyond Huntley it is quiet, has some nice climbs over May Hill, and a better surface than any of the other options. Its a shame the same comment cannot be made of the surface through the Walford Valley, where glances at spectacular sceney had to be snatched between studies of the tarmac in front.
The Wye valley below the Kerne Bridge was similarly rewarding with views, before we turned at Lower Lydbrook to climb into the heart of the Forest, and the long descent to Lydney. I am blaming a lengthy stop at the level crossing in Lydney, while the train to Cardiff Central lingered in the station, for our late arrival at coffee, a hazard we rarely suffer on club rides. After coffee and cake in pleasent surroundings, we headed back via the steep climb to Yorkley. Altogether an excellent morning out.
