Ten riders left the Square knowing of a grim weather forecast, which proved accurate. A sheltered start along the canal took us to Epney Lane and a left turn avoided the Elmore climb; instead it was into a strong chilly SE wind and the start of rain. A cape stop was made at Saul when the heavens opened but a puncture stopped us restarting. A puncture in the rain, still it could be worse. Wait and see.
When the group restarted it was with the wind behind us en route to Standish. At this point I stopped avoiding puddles and hoped there were no deep potholes. It was a good run to Brookthorpe, if you like the rain. The Motorway service station gate was locked so four bikes were lifted over before one bright rider tried the pedestrian gate, which opened for the remainder.
Coffee and warmth soon revived spirits only for them to be dashed anew when wet gloves and helmets were donned to go out into the Tempest. It was back up to the road where the gate was open and this time we rode easily through. Disaster struck when Ben’s derailleur went into his wheel breaking changer and chain, yes worse than a puncture. Seb gallantly rescued Ben by car but a sorry ending for Ben’s last ride of the year.
The rest then flew back to Gloucester getting colder by the minute. Let’s hope the New Year offers drier weather. 24 miles.
