Ten riders left the Square and picked up a latecomer as we sought to avoid the roadworks in Cheltenham Road. The leader, in view of the tropical temperatures forecast, plotted a route avoiding hills, something well nigh impossible in the Cotswolds. He led the riders through Shurdington and Leckhampton against an unexpected NE wind that was not at all tropical.

Through quaint Charlton Kings we emerged onto the A40, which offered a long gentle climb to Whittington. More climbing was required to pass Syreford to get to Hazelton via a long, long drag. A little more climbing to Hampnet forcing the leader to walk (there was an arrow on the map), then quickly to Northleach prison for refreshments, which were not particularly good. We were joined by Alister S and his son Toby, whom we welcomed back.

In view of the heat that had now manifested itself we went via the scenic route through Stowell Park and Yanworth. The views of the grain fields were spectacular and I thought of Ukraine. Some left us at Yanworth to get a few more miles in but the rest continued to Wit,hington, Cheltenham and home.
The lunch group met Marie and the others at the Hewlett Arms. The return route took us to see the graffiti at Arle Court subway, but temporary traffic lights disrupted the group. We returned to Gloucester safely in the now 28° C temperature.
49 miles 2664 feet climbing.
