Perhaps an earlier start deterred some but only four takers left Kings Square at 8:30. Thsi was soon whittled down to three as a brisk headwind asserted some influence. The remaining trio pressed on through Tuffley and the lanes of Haresfield on their way to Kings Stanley and the Middleyard ascent to Selsley Common. Sheltered from the worst of the wind the wood garlic in Pen Hill Wood pervaded the next few miles before the wind took over again as we rose past Kingscote Barn to experience its full strength.
Then, passing Wotton Golf Club we descended Wotton Hill to Bradley Green, Kingswood and, finally, Wickwar.

Our prompt arrival at the Coffee Shop was thought timely, but kitchen service – initially laudable – left our leader waiting forty minutes: somewhat longer than some later arriving clients. But drinks and food were of a good quality and the venue may merit further trial. Fully fed the intrepid trio set off for Cromhall and thence Damery and Woodford before Berkely and Gossington Bridge. At which point a sharp decline in support left the leader and Captain to ride to Woodend Lane, Frocester, Whitminster , Stroud Green before arriving at the Beacon at the appointed hour to find a solo Les and our former companion quaffing Gloucester Gold.
We were soon joined by our octagenarian who, after suitable refreshment, accompanied the “grupo completo” for the final few miles home.
