After the recent day after day adverse meteorological conditions, this day looked promising and it did indeed turn out that way. A large group set off from Kings Square, but the faster pace soon split the pack, and three riders settled into a steady tempo rhythm. The A40 threw up the expected climbs after Huntley and a left turn was then made to Mitcheldean to take the climb up Stenders.
On through Drybrook and Ruardean before dropping down via Joy’s Green and on to Parkend where three became two. ROAD CLOSED, was the signage and we stopped to check whether we could get though. Some mountain bikers thought so and on we went optimistically. Ah, big obstacle! We tried to walk between the metal fencing and verge, but it was no good, too muddy, and very broken ground, so reverse. Coffee at Parkend perhaps and then home? But the fence was open at one point; we just hadn’t seen it so we cycled through and, hey presto, we emerged at the other end.
Refreshment was taken at Lydney as planned and we then headed home enjoying some newly laid tarmac out of the town. There are some good surfaces being laid. Just a shame it’s not everywhere.
By then the sun was making a very welcome appearance and, with the SW tailwind, we made good progress. Some deer were spotted close to the road after Upper Soudley and were not spooked by our silent pedalling actions. What a great morning out, given the weather we have been experiencing the last few weeks; no rain jacket needed!
