A grand sum of nine turned up for the easy ride to the race HQ at Maisemore. The route took us north through Sandhurst, selecting the right hand approach into the village. Evidence of the heavy overnight rain was abundant with much water and debris necessitating attention at all times.
A short stretch of the A38 saw us onto the twisty climb to Wainlodes and its fast descent back to river level. From here it was over Haw Bridge and along to Chaceley on deserted roads. A gentle climb to the Corse Lawn road proved easy, and a decent bit of ponding on Linkend Road entertained us. At the Butcher’s Arms in Eldersfield Lizzy suffered a deflation, which once we had forced the tyre off the rim (thank goodness for metal tyre levers provided by the Captain) proved to have been caused by a good sized thorn. Yes, it’s that time of year again! Lizzy now leads the Bruce’s Bonus competition.
Time was running short so it was down the B4213 to take in the ascent to Hasfield. The incline resulted in a fluffed gear change for one rider and the luckless Lizzy took to the verge – fortunately no damage except to pride.
Ashleworth was next and then the ascent to Woolridge Hill – for the usual fast descent to refreshments at the HQ. A jolly good spread was enjoyed by all groups, thanks going to the organisers.
An impromptu lunch stop was called for, The Pelican winning the vote – just before a spot of light rain, meaning we had to delay our final cycle home for it to pass. It’s a tough life!
It should be recorded that John also came to grief on the cyclepath, having misjudged an interesting camber – fortunately the fence saved him from a dip in the Severn!
30 miles, just.
