The Ed Unsworth Trophy is awarded to the fastest club member in the Roadman’s Hill Climb. Historically the route was up A46 from the Twelve Bells roundabout to Cranham Corner but in recent years traffic forced it to be moved to the quieter B4073 from Birchall Lane to Watery Lane.
The trophy was donated by Ed’s family to commemorate the death of Edwin Unsworth who was the twin brother of George. They joined the club in 1998 and were both very talented riders. Ed would ride up to 250 miles a week in training and competition and excelled at both road racing and time trials. He also enjoyed cycle touring in the U.K. and in Europe.
Ed died on 3rd August 2005 when he collided with a car at the turning to Nut Hill while descending Fiddlers Elbow at the end of an evening training ride with his brother.
