News

The Gravel forecast for 19th April: Stony at first becoming earthy. Tarmac later.

Disappointed that no one was at the Square for the advertised gravel ride, I set off with the steady group bound for Caudle Green and deleted the gravel route from my bike computer. Along Painswick Road, though, a late arrival came seeking the gravel peloton. Now lacking a route to follow I made one up as we went along, adding a frisson of uncertainty to the endeavour. Unknown to me, this left another graveller (is there a better name?) waiting in vain on the published route. Fortunately for...

Fastest rider, on a TT bike, was Jake Sergant . Road bike champion was Matthew Uttley, both of Team Bottrill.  Club riders' results were: Full results are here.

Tetbury in the Spring

On a sunny (but fresh) April morning 10 (sorry 9) riders set off from the square on their way to the Tetbury Goods Shed Cafe. We travelled out of town along Eastgate Street and up Barton Street and straight on into Matson. Along the way we were briefly joined by the leader of the “off road” ride, however this was short lived as he gained a ride companion and duly adjusted his route to lead this ride. Just past the M5 bridge we turned left into Birchall Lane and briefly thought of turning right...

Spring has sprung

Seven riders assembled in the small patch of sun on a bright, but cold spring morning. A brisk pace over to Leckhampton warmed us up for the first of five punishing climbs. Bright sunshine and great views greeted us once we had suffered the climb up Hartley Lane, and a herd of deer were spotted after Upper Coberley. The surface through Hilcot is as dire as I remembered, and while safe to ascend, in my opinion descending to Hilcot would be foolish. The final climb before coffee, Withington...

Satisfying Saturday

Six set out for a sunny spin this morning, we lost one to work commitments and another to the arrival of a grandchild (congratulations!) but the remaining four thoroughly enjoyed a brisk but chatty wander through Norton, Tirley, Eldersfield, Bromsberrow, and Kempley before stopping for a well earned break at The Ark Cafe in Newent, The weather was delightful, as was the company and the cakes (someone even went back for a second helping - your secret is safe with me!). If you're free on a...

A stimulating ride

Does anyone know what the picture above represents? and why it's so important to cyclists? It explains why seven of us set off from the square into a stiff breeze and battled up to Edge, then down to Cainscross, then up again to Selsey, down to Frocester, up to Nympsfield, down to Wotton, up to Tortworth, and finally down to Falfield. What was available in Falfield that made all this worthwhile? Coffee and cake of course! The diagram shows a caffeine molecule. Caffeine is a central nervous...

Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose

Riding on the summer timetable, seven turned up at the University’s City Campus for a ride to Beckford. Though the majority were on safety bicycles with derailleur gears technological developments through the ages were evident; an Old Ordinary (decorated with an actual penny and farthing) and a single gear bike (both with rim brakes), carbon frames, hydraulic disc brakes and gravel tyres with more gears than a flat ride like this could possibly need. In fact, the only thing missing was summer....
