Pete Reed Memorial Trophy

Pete Reed Memorial Trophy

Pete Reed was only in the club for a short time joining in 1988. He is remembered for being an enthusiastic and competitive cyclist. He enjoyed club runs and racing. He rode the Black Mountains run on a brand new bike but when he saw the state of the muddy tracks he carried it up and down Gwyn Fawr to keep it clean!

Pete died in a freak accident while cycling on his way home from work on 12th February 1991. The trophy was donated by his wife, Lyn. It is awarded to the veteran rider with the fastest rides over two ten mile and two twenty five mile time trials from any GCCC, Association or Open events after a calculation from the V.T.T.A. Standards Table. The Calculation method follows, below the table of past winners.

The Pete Read Memorial Trophy may be awarded to a Veteran GCCC club member qualifying by virtue of completing at least two 10-mile and two 25-mile rides from any GCCC, Association or Open events or combinations thereof subject to the following rules;

  1. Club members wishing to be considered for this trophy should submit their best times for two 10-mile and two 25-mile events achieved in the current season giving their age on the date that each time was achieved.
  2. All Speeds in rules (3) and (4) below will be be calculated by dividing Distance (in miles) by Time (in exact hours) giving each result correct to three decimal places.
  3. Each On-standard Speed [OSS] shall be calculated by reference to the Standard Age/Distance table from the current VTTA Handbook.
  4. Each Actual Event Speed [AES] shall be calculated for each of the four events.
  5. The greatest Arithmetic Mean of the four [AES minus OSS] speeds shall determine the winner.

The following illustrative examples may assist in showing the above practically (all working figures shown to 3 decimal places). In this set of examples, Example 2 at 1.232 beats Example 1 at 1.125.

Example 1 – Male aged 60 then 61 as the season progresses. Arithmetic Mean Speed Difference for this rider = (2.065+2.461-0.279+0.254)/4 =+1.125
