OVER 130 YEARS OF CYCLING

We organise social and recreational Club rides.

Welcome to Gloucester City Cycling Club

The Club is active throughout the year and supports social and cycling events at all levels. We tour, at home and abroad. We race – time trials, road races and cyclo-cross with some track thrown in too. We also campaign for better, safer cycling in our area.

Check out our ride categories and Calendar, then come along and make yourself known to the ride leader. Or have a go at a Club Time Trial on Day Membership.

We welcome anyone who cycles for commuting, pleasure or sport.

The red light district

A warning at King's Square kept the Moderate pace ride numbers low. Apparently Ham Hill isn't very popular! Undaunted the President led the sextet to an astonishing number of red traffic lights, some permanent, some not. One even seemed to be permanently red and a diversion was necessary to avoid it. Passing the House in the Tree on the usually avoided Old Gloucester Road provided relief, then a crossing of PEW into Arle gave the Captain an opportunity to add more highlighter to his map as he...

Exploring Cheltenham’s cycle paths

Twelve riders left the Square with a following wind and avoided the temporary traffic lights on Cheltenham Road by going via Innsworth Lane and Down Hatherley where they joined the cycle path which pleased us and motorists alike. A slight diversion via side roads at Benhall took us back onto the cyclepath and then to the Honeybourne cycle path. The leader learned that there was an easier way onto it if he had spotted the sign. The group whizzed along the path dodging walkers and dogs all...

Beautiful spring morning

A flat parcours, good teamwork, and a tail wind made for a speedy ride to Hailes Fruit Farm on a bright blustery spring morning. We were able to take advantage of the "reserved for Alastair" table and still vacate it by the required 11:00 time. The nature of the ride changed instanty after coffee, with a climb of Salter's Hill being only one of a number of fairly brutal, and some would say unnecessary, climbs on the return. Lambs on the hill may have been a problem for those descending, but...

Hills, Kills, But No Spills

Ten riders set off from the Square, heading to Cirencester after a night of yet more rain - and more rain at breakfast time before setting forth. However we were not troubled by further precipitation, and the cloudy morning eventually gave way to something more spring-like. The temperature was also warm for the time of year. After a couple of waits at traffic lights, we eventually broke free of the city environs and passed through Upton St Leonards to the familiar climb of Nut Hill; a road...

Moderate ride to Cinderford

On a mild start to the day, on wet roads following the overnight rain, 11 left the square on the moderate ride bound for Cinderford. We passed the Tempo ride just short of Westgate bridge. An early deflation disrupts their ride. 🔧 Onwards and upwards to Woolridge Hill, a call rang out "Cinderford is behind us". A left turn at the top of the hill rectified this somewhat. We descended down to Hartpury College, eventually passing a couple of slightly nervous horse riders on their trusty steeds....

The long and winding road

As we left over Westgate Bridge, Paul cried out "Please, please help me", so John, Ringo and George stopped. With a little help from his friends, the puncture was quickly fixed, and we continued. Sadly, I cannot claim a Penny Lane on the route through Tibberton and Taynton to Huntley and Blaisdon, nor can I claim to have seen Lady Madonna or Father McKenzzie outside Flaxley Church. Previous experience warned us about about the 4,000 holes on the way down from Littledean to Newnham, so that was...

Sunny and scenic ride to Dursley

The first Sunday of March gave us one of the coldest mornings of winter this year, after a freezing-over in the night. Luckily the morning also brought with it glorious sunshine, which continued throughout the day! After some deliberation between the ride leaders, I decided I would stick to my planned route rather than diverting straight down the A38 to Dursley. I knew I needed to be very aware of the risk of ice on the roads, but my feeling was to try it out and be extra cautious. Four other...

Winter turns to spring

The commentator on Strada Biancha stated that they had had 4 seasons in one day. It was decidly wintery when we set off, with a frost even in the city. Consequently, we elected to go to Dursley via the gritted A38. After we cleared Quedgeley, the racing secretary took the wind, and set a brisk pace all the way to the Slimbridge roundabout. While we all welcomed the tow, there was probably a little relief when he decided to continue to the Severn Bridge. A mexican standoff, with us and two cars...
