GLOUCESTER CITY CYCLING CLUB

CEBAR TIME TRIAL RESULTS 2004

The purpose of the competition is to encourage more riders to take part in the Club time trial events.  The competition is open to all club members and will run as follows.
For each 25, 10 (not Dan Knight events), 1km,  Circuit of Pendock, 3 Cities and the 2 Hill climbs points will be awarded:
1st 10 points ;2nd 9 ;3rd 8 ;4th 7 and so on down to 10th for 1 point.
The winner of the competition will be the person with the most points, regardless of the number of events entered. There is no qualifying restriction other than Dan Knight events not counting. eg you could win by just riding two 10s and one Circuit of Pendock, provided you accumulated sufficient points.
There are two categories one for Seniors and one for Vets.
A Medal will be presented to the two winners at the end of the season - at the Annual Dinner of course.

FINAL OVERALL POSITIONS AFTER 18 EVENTS:

PAUL BARNARD TROPHY - OVERALL CEBAR WINNER : CURRENT TABLE

The new trophy for 2004. The winner is the person with the most points from all the CEBAR events. 10 points for first place, etc down to 1 point for 10th place. No regard for category (Senior or Veteran) - just the overall position in the event. The overall best time and entries (ie effort and commitment!) wins.
George has finally taken the lead, in the very last event! Yet another perfect score he has 10 points advantage over Phil who did not enter the Portway Hill Climb.

Results by event :

Portway Hill Climb, 0.5 mile, 01/09/04. Helpers: Andy Jarvis ; John Godley ; Alastair Goldie ; Derek Dowdeswell.  Conditions: Perfect, cool and dry.  The John Barnes record set back in 1991 of 2min 28 secs still stands, although George shaved another 4 seconds off his PB to come within 7 seconds of the time. In doing so he grabbed 10 points in the Paul Barnard Trophy competition and is the inaugural winner of this new competition. So a big hoorah to George, a well deserved win. Ian had a go - first time for over 3 years and came just outside the 2 minute barier. Ed was not too pleased with his ride, Toby took 3 seconds off his PB, whilst Theo charged up the steep slope on a folding bike - a creditable 4.20.Dave Simmonds had his first go of this course to record 4.28. Photos to follow soon...

Three Cities, 15/08/04.  Helpers: Alison Jarvis.   Conditions - near perfect, no wind and overcast / cool to warm.  A good number of starters but two DNF, Ian at Worcester and John at Hereford. A city (or 2) too far! George came reasonably close to the John Barnes record (3.23). The tandem pair of Andy and John Jarvis set a new record - blasting the previous record set way back in the 1950's. The Tourist trophy was taken by Phil Hogsflesh.  Well done to all medal-winners.

Club 25 mile Time Trial Championships, 04/08/2004.   Helpers: Timekeepers - Ann and John godley ; Pusher-off - John Flint ; Marshals - Ann and John Barnes.  Conditions: Hot, dry, slight breeze from the SW making the outward leg hard and the return leg relatively easier. A superb win by George, the man on form. Vets champion is Martin Watkins, a shade over the hour. A memorable outing, especially for John Godley as his motor would not start after the finish: a jump-start by ann and her van eventually saved his evening.

23/06/2004 : CEBAR : 2-Up 10. Helpers : John Godley / Paul Brookes.  A very windy night, the outward leg was a slog with a gusty head / side wind. Quick back, mind. Not ideal for a 2-up. Rob B was not well on the way round so the pair caled it a day at Cambridge. A close tustle between the Phil - Andy and John - Gerry pairs.  Ian was the only no-mate rider but still put in a fine performance - just shows how hard it was.

16/06/2004 : CEBAR : Inter-Club 10 on U7B (Newport to Slimbridge). Helpers : John Godley / Alastair Goldie - timekeepers ; Ann and Toby Wooldridge - signing on / teas / results.  Conditions : warm, strong SW wind made the return leg particularly hard. Nevertheless the course record was broken by 1 second by Dave Keene of Bristol South (22.07) - quite excellent!   Dursley fielded a strong team and took the Inter-Club Shield. They achieved 569 points ; Severn RC, last years winners, came second with 532 despite having by far the most riders. The Gloucester with 343 and Bristol South with 267. The motor vehicle accident at Berkley Road junction slowed a number of middle-starters but thankfully did not involve any cyclists. All in all, with a full field of 60 (indeed we had to turn two riders away) it all went rather well. Thanks go to all the helpers on the day. A snip for 80p - thanks to those that donated the 20p to the funds.

This event is really quite painful - indeed some riders decided not to do all three rides. On the basis that the best ride counts and generally the first ride is best - why bother?! The counter argument is that 1k ride = £1 ; 3 rides = 3k = £1, a bargain! Hmm.

Toby even managed to gain a 'D' standard medal having failed miserably on previous attempts! John Flint needs to squeeze out another minute - one of his aims for this year.
